Take the afternoon enjoying the scenery with over 4.5 miles of trails, with plenty of opportunities to shorten or lengthen the distance depending on the moods of your hiking partners! Bring along a small backpack of water and snacks to refresh yourself along the trail, but please note that there are not any restrooms, so a pit stop before you start your adventure is advisable! It was a little treacherous after that morning's rain, and definitely not a place I'd feel comfortable taking my younger son. Our plan to follow the outer loop of the trail led us among trails overlooking Big Creek, though if I had it to do over again, I would veer to the left at our first intersection as we ended up having to hike across some pretty slippery rocks that looked over the fast-moving creek. But best of all, we have trails that lead us to enjoy the beauty of that nature, tucked away in places you may not expect. There are restrooms near the entrance.Living in Georgia, we're surrounded by tall trees, rolling hills and mountains, and flowing rivers. I would recommend a visit to this park for anyone interested in American/Civil War History, hiking and nature.įamilies with young children would enjoy this park. One gets a first hand account from an actual soldier describing the event of the Cotton Mill Destruction and his genuine emotions. Markers near the entrance point out and explain the relevant historic ruins of the original cotton mill, burned by Union troops- and the rebuilding of said mill.

The historical significance of this park and area is apparent to the Civil War effort and should not be missed.

We heard many bird songs over the roar of the creek and enjoyed the blossoming dogwood trees. The spring blossoms on a few bushes were a surprise as we thought they might be only native to the south. We explored up the trail on the way back to our vehicle and enjoyed the forest beauty. The surging high waters, rumbling over the dam and thundering down the creek was worth the short hike. We hiked the far side of the creek, down to the waterfall/dam and had no trouble on the trails. We crossed the covered bridge, which is a delightful experience with the swirling high waters of Vickers Creek below! We are in our senior years and did not have difficulty on the wet trails and rocks. My husband and I ventured into OLD MILL PARK after a two day deluge of flooding rains.
